Ian Butler

Ian Butler picIan Butler is a Research Fellow in the School of GeoSciences, University of Edinburgh, and is the co-manager of the Experimental Geoscience Facility, a NERC recognised national facility. Full details of his research interests and publications are available here.

Ian completed his PhD at Cardiff University in 1995 and subsequently worked at the National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton and at Cardiff University specialising in analytical and experimental geochemistry with an emphasis on low temperature processes. Ian joined Edinburgh in 2006 as the ECOSSE Research Fellow in Experimental Geoscience. 

His scientific expertise includes:

  • Experimental Geochemistry - including the design of novel apparatus
  • Isotope Geochemistry - applications to mineral reaction mechanisms
  • Anoxic Environments - biogeochemistry in the absence of oxygen
  • Mineral Formation - fundamental chemical mechanisms.
