Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences
The mathematical sciences departments at Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities have worked together on several projects for over fifteen years. Particularly notable is the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences which was set up in 1991 and has an established international reputation for organising high-level workshops and conferences. The combined strengths of the departments make the position of the subject unique amongst a pair of adjacent universities in Scotland.
The primary aim of this JRI will be to expand and strengthen basic research in mathematics and to provide an environment for collaborative research into innovative, multidisciplinary areas underpinning the physical and life sciences, engineering, business, finance and industry. This will lead to a breadth of high quality mathematical research emulating that of leading universities world wide and will place the JRI amongst the top centres for mathematical research in the UK.
